History of Marrero Lions Club
The Marrero Lions Club was organized in January of 1956, for the purpose of serving the Marrero Community and its people. The Lions first priority is sight and hearing conservation.
Our first president was Harry Pitre of Marrero Land Company. We began raising funds by having can shakers on street corners and selling Halloween candy which netted just a few hundred dollars yearly. Since that time the Marrero Lion Club raises thousands of dollars through various fund raisers such as Bingos, fruitcake sales, giant give-away, Texas Hold' em and the like.
We were instrumental in the creation of the Lions Crippled Children's Camp in Leesville, La. in 1958 and the La. Lions Eye Foundation in 1975. We are still strong supporters of these projects, not only financially, but through our referrals of patients to the LSU/Lions Eye Clinic and by sponsoring handicapped kids to the Crippled Children's Camp every summer.
When we began over 54 years ago, we met in members homes. Then for the next 31 years we moved about the West Bank like nomads in the desert. We met in the back of bars, in restaurants, in motel meeting rooms, in fire stations and any place that would have us before moving into our facility on St. Patrick's Day, 1988.
Whatever we are today we owe to the support of the people of the West Bank and particularly of Marrero.
For their past leadership and dedication, we thank the past presidents of the Marrero Lions Club as follows:
